The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised concern over the reported violent incident in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of the state, calling on security agencies to urgently investigate the situation and restore calm.
The party, through the Osun APC Media Cluster, during an emergency press briefing on Monday, alleged that political violence linked to armed thugs had resulted in the loss of lives, attacks on security personnel and disruption of economic activities in the area.
According to the group, the incident occurred around Naira and Kobo Junction, Ikire, where it alleged that armed individuals attempted to take control of a local transport hub, leading to the death of innocent citizens and widespread tension in the community.
The APC Media Cluster described the development as a serious threat to public safety and democratic stability, urging relevant security authorities to take immediate steps to protect residents and prevent further escalation.
The group further alleged that police officers responding to a distress call were attacked during the incident, with some weapons reportedly taken from officers in the process. It called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of anyone found responsible for the violence, regardless of political affiliation.
The party also linked the recent incident to what it described as a worrying pattern of political violence in Irewole Local Government, referencing the previous killing of the council chairman, Hon. Remi Abass, and expressing concern over the lack of conclusion of investigations into past incidents.
The APC Media Cluster appealed to security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant authorities, to act decisively in protecting lives and property, securing public institutions and ensuring that perpetrators of violence are brought to justice.
The group also urged residents and party supporters to remain calm and avoid any action capable of worsening the situation, stressing that disputes in a democracy must be resolved through lawful and constitutional means.
While commiserating with families affected by the incident, the APC Media Cluster reaffirmed its commitment to peace and stability in Osun State, calling on all stakeholders to work together to preserve the security and dignity of the people.
“Osun belongs to everyone. No political disagreement should be allowed to turn into violence or place innocent citizens at risk,” the group stated.
