Anyanwu Blames PDP Governors’ Forum for Party Turmoil

Expelled National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has accused the PDP Governors’ Forum of fuelling the unrest currently destabilising the opposition party.

Anyanwu, who featured on a Channels Television programme, Politics Today, said the root of the party’s crisis lies squarely with the governors, not with individuals who have been singled out for blame. His remarks form part of a broader argument that the party’s structural challenges have been worsened by what he described as undue interference from the Forum.

According to him, the governors had persistently attempted to assert themselves beyond their constitutional limits, culminating in a proposal to formally recognise the Governors’ Forum as an organ of the party during a previous constitutional amendment process. He said this move eroded internal cohesion and signalled to many founding members that the party had abandoned its foundational principles.

“The truth of the matter is that I will hold the Governors’ Forum responsible for whatever is happening to the party today,” he said, insisting he would not accept responsibility for a crisis he believes was engineered by those who should have preserved party unity.

Anyanwu argued that the shake-up within the PDP had already driven several longstanding stakeholders away, weakening the party’s traditional base and emboldening internal factions. He said the departure of founding members underscored how deeply the crisis had eaten into the party’s structure.

The former Imo governorship candidate maintained that the party must revisit its internal governance model if it hopes to regain stability ahead of future electoral contests, adding that the overreach of certain actors had made collective decision-making increasingly difficult.

He reiterated that until the party confronts what he described as the “excessive influence” of governors, the PDP would continue to grapple with instability and waning public confidence.
