Osun Government Should Reverse Approval of N320 Million Luxury Car for UNIOSUN Pro-Chancellor, Wale Oladipo

The Concerned Students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) call on the Management of the University and the Osun State Government to immediately stop the approval for the purchase of a luxury vehicle worth N320 million for the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, Professor Wale Oladipo.

Professor Wale Oladipo, a chieftain of the Accord Party in Osun State, was appointed by Governor Ademola Adeleke in July 2023 as the Chairman of the Governing Council and Pro-Chancellor of Osun State University and since that time, the school fees of the institution have been increased three times.

Given the growing public concern, an approval for procurement of a luxury vehicle is not only disgusting but also insensitive, especially when the total capital projects executed by the university last year amounted to only N746 million, all of which were funded through the Federal Government’s Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). Without the intervention of the Federal Government through TETFund, there would have been virtually no capital projects in the university during the period.

The reported approval is also wasteful, considering that the same Pro-Chancellor was provided with an SUV valued at about N150 million in 2023. Approving another luxury vehicle barely a few years later raises serious questions about the institution’s spending priorities at a time when students and their parents are battling severe economic hardship.

It is even more disheartening that the university generated little Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in 2025, while students continue to bear the burden of exorbitant tuition and other charges, with some paying as much as N1.4 million per academic session. It is therefore unacceptable that scarce resources, which students believe should be directed towards improving teaching, research, laboratories, hostels and other learning facilities, are being used to finance luxury purchases for political appointees who are playing little or no productive roles in the university.

We therefore demand an immediate reversal of the obnoxious approval from the University Management and the Osun State Govern in the interest of transparency, accountability and responsible management of public resources.

We wish to state unequivocally that unless this wicked approval is reversed, the students of Osun State University, in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), will have no alternative but to mobilize and take to the streets to register our rejection of what we consider a highly provocative and insensitive decision.

Education should be funded with prudence, not extravagance. The welfare of students and the development of the university must always take precedence over luxury and excess. The students will not sit back while our school fees are used to fund luxury lifestyles of politicians.
