After Arsenal’s embarrassing home loss to Brighton last weekend, it was clear that City were closing on the title and was a matter of when and not if. The stage was set for City to be crowned champions at the Etihad if they beat Chelsea with everyone expecting Arsenal to at least delay the title party a little while with a win against Nottingham Forest at the City ground.
The party started early as Nottingham Forest beat Arsenal thanks to a first half strike from Nigerian striker, Taiwo Awoniyi. With that win, Forest have guaranteed their top flight status and also ensured Manchester City are crowned champions without kicking the ball. Now, Chelsea will have to mount a guard of honor for the new champions instead of making an attempt to further delay the title party.
Manchester City have now secured the first of three possible trophies and the march to a possible treble continues. Up next would be an Emirates FA Cup final date at Wembley with neighbors Manchester United and then a charge for European glory against Serie A giants, Inter Milan at Istanbul.
City have now won the last 3 Premier League titles and 5 in the last 6 seasons, equalling a feat last set by Sir Alex Ferguson-led Manchester United.
