A civil society organisation, Centre for Democratic Stability and Human Rights (CDSHR), has called on security agencies to prevent any action capable of causing unrest in Osun State following reports of a Federal High Court judgment allegedly affecting the legal status of the Accord Party.

In a statement issued in Osogbo on Monday by the Director of the organisation, Comrade Gideon Olatunde, the group expressed concern over the planned flag-off of the Accord Party’s campaign in the state amid reports that a court had directed the deregistration of the party alongside some other political parties.

According to the organisation, allowing political activities to proceed without clarity on the party’s legal status could create uncertainty and heighten tensions within the polity.

The group stated that if a valid and subsisting court judgment indeed exists directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take steps regarding the party’s registration, relevant authorities should first clarify the legal position before any major political gathering is allowed to hold.

CDSHR urged the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other security agencies to urgently assess the implications of the reported judgment and take lawful measures to prevent any breach of peace.

The organisation warned that permitting a campaign flag-off to proceed while legal questions remain unresolved could lead to confusion, confrontation, and a possible breakdown of law and order.

It further noted that Osun State had experienced considerable political tension in recent times and stressed that all stakeholders should prioritise the security of lives and property above partisan interests.

The group also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to provide immediate clarification on the legal status of the Accord Party in light of the reported court pronouncement in order to prevent misinformation and controversy.

Emphasising the need for restraint, the organisation maintained that no political activity should be allowed to endanger public safety, regardless of its sponsors or objectives.

The group appealed to political actors, government institutions, and security agencies to uphold the rule of law and place the preservation of peace above all other considerations while awaiting clarification from the appropriate legal and electoral authorities.
